We own safety. The safety of our workers, clients, partners, and the public is our first priority on every jobsite. Our outstanding safety record and reputation for safe jobsites is a result of our robust Safety Program. The Safety Program encompasses training, implementation, enforcement, and documentation. We are currently recognized by the local Associated General Contractors Chapter and OSHA as being a CHASE Blue participant in 2019-20.
TRAINING
We continuously train our employees through monthly safety meetings, OSHA 10-HR and 30-HR courses, First Aid/CPR Training, and a variety of task-specific training. The majority of our team is OSHA 30-HR trained and anyone who isn’t is scheduled for the training within the next year. We train our subcontractors through our mandatory jobsite Safety Orientation Program and weekly Safety Meetings during which site and project-specific hazards are always a topic of discussion.
IMPLEMENTATION
We require the completion of a job hazard analysis (JHA) for every task that is performed on our jobsites. These help employees and Subcontractors recognize potential hazards and ensures the necessary precautions are in place to prevent accidents while working safely. Knowing how to work safely does not create a safe jobsite; employing safe work practices creates a safe work environment. Brinkman Construction is committed to its employees and Subcontractors to implement our Health and Safety Program and put safe work practices into action.
INSPECTION & ENFORCEMENT
As the Controlling Contractor on our jobsites, we have a responsibility to inspect work activities for safety compliance and require that our Health and Safety Plan and OSHA Standards are followed. Superintendents and other project staff inspect each project regularly throughout each day and fill out a Daily Safety Inspection Form. We require daily inspections by the onsite Competent Person for scaffold, excavations, trenches, and equipment.
During these inspections, deficiencies are noted and then followed-up on until corrected. We demand safe work practices on our jobsites and use our disciplinary policy of verbal warnings, written warnings, and removing people from jobsites as necessary to ensure standards are followed.
DOCUMENTATION
There are two main objectives for Safety Documentation:
- To plan ahead for hazards created by work activities and create safe work plans to mitigate these hazards.
- To document all efforts and attempts to run safe projects as a means of showing OSHA we are controlling our jobsites and making every possible effort to make them safe.
Our site-specific Safety Books are where we keep a record of project specific safety documentation. Our Safety Manager also maintains a record of ongoing safety training and other safety items that are not project-specific.
We have a zero-incident culture. Even more than the procedures that are in place, our people truly care about the well-being of the men and women on our jobsites and are passionate about making sure they have a safe working environment.
